FAMILY TIME

It’s the age-old New England story. An active family from the Boston suburbs buys an easygoing summer home on Cape Cod only to realize that it needs to be reworked to make sense for their kids, gregarious dog, and all the friends they want to host as soon as possible.

What started as a simple update to the 1990’s era kitchen and bathrooms, plus the addition of a new pool very quickly evolved into a large-scale renovation that was surprisingly modern and organic, with just subtle nods to a coastal lifestyle.

Structurally, the living room is very open to the main floor and serves as a pass-through to the pool and sunroom. Given this challenge, NHD successfully designed a welcoming and functional gathering space to comfortably accommodate the family of six without closing off the direct access to the outdoor spaces.

Indoor outdoor fabrics in sand tones and wood that references sailboats off the coast match the breezy mood. Lighting design over the driftwood-inspired dining room table references local fishing nets, buoys, and heritage.

A worldly but sometimes playful art collection is displayed throughout the home. NHD adroitly tapped  local artists and galleries to create a growing  collection of the best of New England art. The clients were excitedly involved in the ultimate selections and became collectors in the process.

The children’s rooms are each unique just like their occupants. Bright pops of color match their personalities, like the purple wallpaper mural and upholstered headboard for two energetic and bubbly girls.

Although the home’s original footprint didn’t dramatically change, small additions throughout the space add up to create an updated, more cohesive space that flows together as perfectly as the waves rolling in just outside.
