URBAN
RUSTIC

Feathering a soon-to-be empty nest, the clients made a major move from the charming town of Lexington, Massachusetts to a Back Bay brownstone while their two children were finishing up high school. They needed their new residence to function with the heart of a suburban family home and the soul of a Back Bay brownstone.

In the living room, the custom fireplace mantel (designed by NHD) incorporates reclaimed wood that the client had fallen in love with from the original unit.

The clients share a love for rich, rustic patinas, and warm tones and this theme comes across in the palette of caramel leathers, antique brass, reclaimed wood furnishings, and shades of blue present throughout their home.

The husband envisioned the primary suite as a retreat with a luxury hotel feel, and this theme carries through to the de-cluttered, warm minimalism of the bedroom. A built-in wardrobe and nightstand in a moody navy coupled with a grass cloth behind the headboard create the feeling of a truly bespoke retreat that prioritizes wellbeing.

NHD took full advantage of every spare inch of storage space for this project—making use of the mechanical room and a previously wasted area under the stairs to carve out a mudroom with classic slate floors and a full-sized laundry room with drawers and cabinets to organize every detail of busy urban life.
